Regarding personal ornamentation:

The wearing of ornamentation (including, but not limited to, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, rings, hair accessories, and all other jewelry) is strictly forbidden under the Starfleet Uniform Code. Ornamentation for purposes other than personal decoration, such as for cultural or religious reasons, may be permitted at the discretion of the Commanding Officer.

Casual Duty Attire:

Certain Starfleet personnel aboard starships may be granted, at the Commanding Officer's discretion, permission to wear an alternative to the standard duty uniform of the day. Individuals that are applicable for this allowance should be those whose duties do not fall within one of the three primary operating divisions of Starfleet: Command, Science, and Operations.

Personal grooming and standards:

All Starfleet personnel must maintain a professional and well-kept appearance at all times while in uniform. The uniform of the day must be clean and pressed, and any footwear shined and free of scuffs. Starfleet does not impose guidelines on the hairstyle or facial hair of personnel, but in keeping with policies regarding personal ornamentation, all personnel must maintain a professional appearance without the need for visible hair accessories.

Provisional Officers:

At the Commanding Officer's discretion, certain personnel described as "Provisional Officers" may be permitted to wear a Starfleet uniform with slightly varied rank insignia. This allowance is reserved for a time of crisis, where full-time training and Starfleet indoctrination of new crew is not possible. A Commanding Officer must report Provisional Officers to Starfleet Command at the first possible opportunity.
