Stardate 40999.1 - Personal Log, Lt JG Elli Vos

The young Trill was tossing and turning for roughly 2 hours in her bed, unable to get to sleep. Eventually, she kicked the sheets off and sat upright, her bare feet touching the carpet. Rubbing her eyes, lids still heavy, she got up and walked slowly to the bathroom, ordering the computer to increase the lighting a bit, allowing her to get used to the light again. Once there, she let the water run for a minute, letting her palms cool down in the stream before splashing her face a bit and turning the tap off. Drying her face off with a towel she tried to rub her eyes again, but missed and got her nose instead.
Elli let herself sink into her couch, looking at her pips on the table. Half a million thoughts raged through her mind before she picked up the golden pip with a black center. Looking at the small item in her hands, running her thumb over the black coating she called in the computer again. "Record personal log." She bowed forward, sitting upright and intensively looking at the rank pip in her fingers. "Personal log, stardate .. 40 .. 409 ... ? Something. It's been a tough bunch of weeks, but we all made it out alive. Well, Kyr tried to get himself killed, careless idiot. Glad he's still around, though. Wouldn't be the same without him. This morning we were all dragged to the holodeck on the station, for command training. Not our own, but, Tyler and Moi'ra both were the target. This was their chance to try their command skills. Tyler was given the role of captain, and Moi'ra was his first officer."
Elli looked at the backside of the pip before turning it around again. It was funny how much value such a simple small object could have. "The program they were given challenged their problemsolving skills. They were presented with the issue of 2 freighters being dragged into a gravimetric anomaly. The first attempt they took their time to discuss the situation with the bridge crew they chose and cmae up with a beam to disrupt the anomaly, allowing the ships to break free. Sadly, as the Artemis, our test ship approached, it reduced the speed at which the freighters were pulled in. Not accounting for this, the beam hit one of the ships, instead of the anomaly, causing one freighter to be torn to shreds."
"T'Char took responsibility for her actions and requested it be reset due to her failure, but, if anything I've learned recently, it's that even if we are responsible for our individual actions, our captain is responsible for us. In the end, he's the one to take the heat. Tyler gave it another shot, and the second try we managed to save all the colonists off the freighters and only lost some of the teams we'd sent over to help evacuate. An optimal outcome, considering the first try. Tyler didn't take it too well, though, as he rightly pointed out that in real life there are no second chances, that you can't just reset the situation. Sure, but the idea behind these tests and training programs is so you get prepared. It's a learning opportunity. Failure is part of learning, and I learned a LOT lately." She chuckled, finally putting the pip back on the table, next to the fully gold one, where it belonged. "At any rate. Both Tyler and Moi'ra were given a passing grade. They did a good job, even when the first try ended in failure. They listened to their crew, and made a decision based on the information they had."
Elli started walking through the room, her feet almost gliding over the soft carpet. "Tyler having to be confronted with failure also made me learn, though. Next I see the captain and, or, the XO, I'll have to take them apart from the rest and just. Well, apologize for one. I realize I've added only more problems to an already tense situation." She yawned loudly, finally getting a bit sleepy. Getting up from the couch, she walked over to her bed, grabbing the sheets she'd thrown off the side. "I'll leave that all for tomorrow. Now, it's time to finally get some sleep. Computer, save and end log."
