Personality & Traits

General Overview A native english speaker with a british english accent, generally better suited to action over diplomacy. A pragmatic and strategic thinker, he prefers to outwit and outmanoeuvre an opponent rather than engage in direct confrontation. Not one to mince words, he is loyal to a fault and takes his position very seriously. While this results in a dedicated, capable, and trustworthy officer, his by-the-book attitude may cause some hesitation or objection if his orders seemingly contradict Starfleet procedure or endanger the captain, and he has a reputation for coming down hard on subordinates who don’t meet his standards.
Although he keeps mostly to himself aboard ship, he does enjoy making close friends, with whom he can be surprisingly open. Though slow to trust, he is quite friendly, and he possesses a dry, witty, and sarcastic sense of humour, despite his hard-boiled and blunt reputation.
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths: Married to Starfleet, loyal, responsible, generally open-minded, physically fit.

Weaknesses: Married to Starfleet, trust must be earned, occasionally over-cautious, possible very mild PTSD, phasers first - questions later.
Ambitions
Hobbies & Interests Though he keeps an exercise regime and enjoys the occasional game of parrises squares, he generally prefers more intellectual pursuits in his downtime, such as literature, music, and visiting historical or fantasy locations on the holodeck.

Personal History Born on Earth, but raised on the Federation colony world Kolos IV, John had a somewhat turbulent, but otherwise unremarkable childhood. His father, an industrial worker, was absent most of the time, and his mother - a woman of Italian heritage - brought home a steady stream of ‘new uncles’, most of whom were surly, brutish, and unkind men.
One of John’s real uncles, a Starfleet officer aboard the science vessel U.S.S. Copernicus, would occasionally check in on the family while on shore leave, and became something of a surrogate father to the boy. The stories this uncle told inspired him to join Starfleet as soon as possible, and to this end he studied hard throughout his teen years, moved back to Earth, and successfully applied to Starfleet Academy upon turning eighteen.

Choosing to embark on a career in the field of security, his academy training included courses on basic leadership, first aid, and encryption; advanced hand-to-hand combat & phaser weapon training; interspecies protocol; negotiation techniques; tactical response; and shipboard tactical systems. Additionally, he took several minor courses on starship and shuttlecraft flight control. He graduated with above average marks in most subjects - an exemplary student in all regards - except for languages, which he found more challenging than his peers.

Serving first aboard the U.S.S. Charleston for three years, he was then reassigned to the U.S.S. Warwick just two months before it was destroyed in an attempt to rescue colonists from a supposed natural disaster near the Federation/Romulan border. For his actions in that crisis, which saved many lives - including those of several senior staff - Church was promoted to Junior Lieutenant and given a posting on the research vessel U.S.S. Fairweather. Upon completion of that ship’s three year expedition, he was assigned to Spacedock 173 for a further two years before requesting a transfer back to an active service vessel. Bored with guarding conferences and cargo in a stationary locale, he is eager to return to a more exciting life aboard ship.
